Frequently Asked Questions
THE TEN MOST ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE
SUMMIT CHORAL SOCIETY’S CHILDREN’S CHOIR PROGRAM
1. How many children participate in the Summit Children’s Choir Program?
There are presently over 200 children participating in the Summit Children’s Choir Program, representing over 72 different schools located in Summit, Portage, Medina, Cuyahoga, Holmes, Wayne and Stark counties. Singers range from 2nd through 12th grades. There is no limit placed on the total number of singers who will be chosen for participation. Auditions are non-competitive and open to all interested singers.
2. How are children assigned to the various classes and ensembles?
There are two divisions in the Summit Children’s Choir Program. The Training Division consists of four training levels. New members are most often placed at one of these training levels. The Ensemble Division consists of the Concert Choir and the Touring Choir. As singers progress through the program, they are assigned to the training level or ensemble that will be most appropriate for them after their age, grade, musical skills, experience, and rehearsal maturity are taken into consideration.
3. When and where do the Summit Children’s Choirs meet?
The Summit Children’s Choir Program holds classes/rehearsals on Monday nights, from September through May at Coventry High School, 3089 Manchester Road, near Portage Lakes. Most training level classes are held both at 5 pm and 6:30 pm and are one hour in length. The Concert and Touring Choirs meet at 6:30 pm. Classes/rehearsals will culminate in concerts in December and May. A Summer Vocal Camp experience is offered for one week in June at Coventry High School. Summer Vocal Camp is scheduled for June 16 – 20 and will culminate with a performance of all the singers on the stage at Central Hower High School on Friday, June 20th.
4. What is the tuition for participation in the Summit Children’s Choir Program?
Tuition for the 2007-2008 season is $375 per child. A monthly payment plan is available thru the Summit Choral Society office. In addition to this tuition a $10 Parent’s Association Fee is payable per family.
5. When will we hear about the results of these auditions?
Children accepted into the SCC Program will be notified of their acceptance and class level immediately upon the completion of their audition.
6. If my child is accepted into the Summit Children’s Choir Program, what will be expected of him/her?
Once a child is accepted into the Program, he/she is expected to commit to being at every class/ rehearsal and performance unless ill or excused by their respective director as outlined in the SCC Singer’s Handbook. Singers in the Ensemble Division are expected to study their music at home between Monday night rehearsals.
Parents/Guardians are expected to remain fully informed by reading the Parent Mailbox which is distributed to each singer every Monday at rehearsal and to attend Parents Association meetings held the fourth Monday of each month. Parents are also encouraged to sit in on at least one (or more) class/rehearsal during the year.
7. What kind of music is performed by the Summit Children’s Choirs?
The repertoire of music used by Summit Children’s Choirs is selected from the best choral music available from throughout the world for children’s voices. Very little, if any, ‘popular’ music will be used in any given year’s repertoire.
8. What do the Summit Children’s Choirs wear when they perform?
For concerts, all singers in the Program wear a basic outfit of white on top and black on the bottom. Each training level/ensemble adds a different red or black accessory to this basic “look” to distinguish it from the others. Complete concert attire information will be available in the 2007-08 Singer’s Handbook.
9. If we know about another child who might be interested in the Summit Children’s Choir Program, is it too late to have them audition?
Auditions are held for new singers in September, January and May. Interested singers should call the Summit Choral Society Office for an audition appointment. No audition is necessary for a child to enroll in the Annual Summer Vocal Camp. Families interested in camp enrollment should call the SCS office to request that a Summer Vocal Camp registration form be sent to them.
10. If we have further questions, to whom should they be directed?
Any questions that are not addressed during your child’s interview/audition can be answered by calling the Summit Choral Society Office at 330-434-SING (7464) from 9 am to 4 pm any week day, Monday through Friday. If Jan is not available at that time, leave your name and phone number and you will be contacted as soon as possible.
